June is National Safety Month, and it’s a time when thousands of organizations across the nation take strides to spread awareness about staying safe at home, at work and on the road. It also happens to coincide with one of the most popular months for swimming pool use, so there’s no better time to step up safety and ensure your friends and family members remain safe before, during and after a swim.

Today’s savvy homeowners are taking extra precautions to manage pool accessibility and improve overall water safety, and many of them are increasingly relying on the following pool safety items to do so.

Pool Fences and Latches

A sensible purchase for any pool owner, fences and latches are designed to restrict unwanted access to your pool area. Pool fences are available in a variety of different heights, with some surrounding the pool itself and some restricting access to the pool area in its entirety. Most of these designs are easy to install and equally easy to remove, should you need to do so.

Pool Alarms

As the name suggests, pool alarms are intended to notify you in the event that someone gains access to your pool without your knowledge, whether it be a child, a pet or a neighbor. Pool alarms come in a variety of styles and designs, with some intended to attach to a pool fence or gate, while others are affixed directly to the pool itself, or to something like a buoy that remains inside.

Water Rescue Gear

Safety rings, rescue tubes and life hooks can all be used to help a troubled swimmer, and they should therefore be kept in close proximity to your swimming pool at all times. You can also purchase a pool-specific first aid kit to keep on hand in the event of an emergency. Finally, depending on the size of your pool, you may want to use rope dividers to indicate where the water deepens and to prevent weak swimmers from entering deeper areas.

When it comes to pool safety, you can’t be too careful. About 10 Americans die every day from unintentional drownings, so take strides to not become a statistic by maintaining strong pool safety practices to the fullest degree possible.
